continues to be an inspiration to anyone who practices healing, not only for Tibetan Medicine.
His book "Rainbow Palace" is difficult to read at times, because what is being told is so terrible. I would often have to put it down after only a few pages at a time. But it is remarkable, both the man and his story.
"The harrowing spiritual memoirs of the late personal physician to the Dalai Lama. This is a profound and moving testament to the power of forbearance, hope and faith.
In 1980, following more than twenty years of torture and suffering as a political prisoner of the communist Chinese government, Dr.Choedrak left his native Tibet to live in exile in India and returned to his duties as doctor to the Dalai Lama. As Dr Choedrak graphically describes his impoverished early years as a child monk, and his progress as a student doctor in Lhasa, an entire culture and the unique therapeutic practices of Tibetan medicine are vividly brought to life. Yet it is his account of the atrocities committed by the Chinese against the Tibetan people that ultimately marks this memoir as exceptional. For, despite the incredible cruelty and squalor inflicted upon him and his fellow prisoners, he used his skill and compassion to attend to his torturers. With unbelievable courage, he also refused to abandon his Buddhist faith and the beliefs to which he had devoted his life.
"His compassion for his jailers is as moving as it is unfathomable. A book about a remarkable life." The Independent." Wisdom BooksGreat joy however is found in watching the DVD "The Knowledge of Healing" which has extensive footage and interviews with Dr Choedrak, and his great compassion just shines out of his being when you hear him speak and watch him at work.
