My Tibetan Medicine teacher - Dr Nida Chenagtsang - has been and gone, and in the short time he was with us here in Australia, we have lived a lifetime of learning.
We journeyed through the next level of Traditional Tibetan Medicine. What an epic journey too! We went much more deeply into diet and lifestyle, both the cause and cure of most illness. We looked at pathology, diagnosis - utilising all the information that our five sense organs provide about our health and well being. Pulse reading and urine analysis were deepened and expanded in our diagnostic tool kit. Yuk Cho! I love stick therapy and we are so lucky to be learning something that has all but died out in Tibet (for now, Dr Nida is passionate about re-invigorating these amazing and unique external therapies). And, the Materia Medica of Tibetan Medicine. Considering that there are more than three and a half thousand herbs and other substances in the Tibetan Pharmacopoeia, and having seen for myself the incredible diversity of the plants of the grasslands of Tibet, this will be a journey we are on for some time I think. The ethics of a physician and the spiritual aspect of our healing work were important to learn and discuss.
Then we were dreaming. Literally. Dreams are an important part of Tibetan medicine studies. It is a whole other reality where images and symbols show us much about our conscious and unconscious mind, and another expression of our emotions.
A day with Yuthok. Always a good day! (The picture here is Dr Nida in full flight giving us teachings on the Yuthok Nyingthik Ngondro). This is a special practice, for everyone, but especially good for those in the healing professions. Unique in the Buddhist canon, it is a complete Ngondro in only seven days. Yuthok, as the Father of Tibetan Medicine, recognised that is it hard for doctors to be away from their patients for long periods of time to do retreat. So we have this incredible practice of purification, compassion and offering that can be completed in just seven days.
And finally, Mantra Healing. This was the first thing I ever studied with Dr Nida and it remains very close to my heart. So it was lovely to reconnect with it as I hovered about in my role as organiser. Another great pleasure this time was my eldest son Alexander also doing this course. Two mantra healers in the family now! I was very pleased and so proud of him!
So thank you Dr Nida for your great kindness in travelling to us and bringing these most wonderful teachings to enable us to help many many sentient beings. May your life be long and very blessed, and all of your aspirations swiftly and joyously realised.
