Pronounced “kou nyay” this is a body work technique that has been practised for around 5,000 years! In the category of external therapies, it is an important treatment aspect of Traditional Tibetan Medicine
Some of the rejuvenating and restorative benefits of this ancient treatment include the elimination of toxins which can be stored in the body, increased vitality, the reduction and alleviation of various types of pain and pain syndromes, the calming of nervous disorders including insomnia, depression and anxiety.
A Ku Nye treatment involves:
- the selection of particular essential oils according to your body typology
- the use of specific muscle movements
- accupressure point work
- joint movement and mobilisation
- application of therapeutic heat with hot rocks and salt
- if appropriate, the removal of excess oils at end of treatment with sandalwood and chickpea powders.
Cupping, moxibustion, massage with shells and the use of Yuk Cho stick therapy are also used when indicated.
A full Ku Nye treatment can take two and a half to three hours.
A shorter treatment (one hour) is also available, a unique style of massage working with ground pure spices replacing massage oil. These are chosen according to body typology. This style of treatment is especially good for pain relief, emotional and energy blockages.
You can watch a short video here of my teacher Dr Nida Chenagtsang giving a Ku Nye treatment.
